Company CSS

Keep fonts, colours and the logo in one CSS file for all documents, and set the language and exceptions of German hyphenation with three CSS properties.

Community

The company CSS is a plain CSS file. It holds fonts, colours, the logo and the hyphenation settings. A template gets it with <link rel="stylesheet" href="company.css"> or with @import.

Brevier loads the files the template names and does not search folders. A file that does not exist is skipped without a message. A file that exists and cannot be read is an error.

Hyphenation properties

Set the properties on :root.

Property Value Does
--brevier-hyphenate-language de or en The language of the hyphenation rules.
--brevier-hyphenate-never A quoted, comma-separated list of words Words that are never hyphenated.
--brevier-hyphenate-teach A quoted, comma-separated list of words with = Words with the break points you choose.
:root {
  --brevier-hyphenate-language: de;
  --brevier-hyphenate-never: "Wüstenrot, Württembergische";
  --brevier-hyphenate-teach: "Berufs=unfähigkeits=versicherung";
}
  • Write the whole list in one pair of quotes: "A, B". Quotes around each word break the list.
  • A word in never or teach matches the written word exactly, including capital letters.
  • In a teach entry, each = marks a place where the word may break. A = must be at least 3 characters from each end of the word, and no part between two = may be empty. An entry that breaks a rule fails, and the message names the entry.

Order of the files

Brevier reads the files in order, and each @import at its place in the file.

  • Hyphenation properties: the last declaration read wins, whatever its specificity, and it replaces the whole value. The lists are not merged.
  • Fonts, colours and all other rules: the normal CSS cascade. A higher specificity wins. At equal specificity the later rule wins.

A file for a region can sit between the template and the company file:

invoice.html   <link href="invoice.css">
invoice.css    @import "../german.css";
german.css     @import "../company.css";
company.css fonts and colours for all documents

invoice.css beats german.css, and german.css beats company.css, because each @import line is the first line of its file.

How hyphenation works is in German typography.
